Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Eccles WV ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Eccles WV hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Eccles WV ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Eccles WV hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in West Virginia or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Eccles WVAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Eccles WV hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Eccles home. This is particularly convenient for those students that continue working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Eccles WV ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Eccles WV area. Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Eccles WV employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Eccles WV hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Eccles medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with West Virginia healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Eccles WV home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Eccles WV area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
