Acme WA sonographer performing ultrasoundNow that you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Acme WA, it’s time to begin the procedure of selecting a school. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will provide the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. And since a number of states do require that sonographers be either certified or licensed, depending on where you will practice you may also need preparation to pass a licensing or certification exam. So it’s extremely important that you research each college so that you can evaluate and compare your alternatives. But exactly where does one begin? Many individuals will begin by looking for schools that are within driving distance of their residences and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost should be taken into account when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools are accredited or if they offer internships. These and additional qualifications will be covered more in detail later in this post. But to start with, let’s go over what an ultrasound tech does and the credentials and online training options that are available.

Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Acme WA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Acme WA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Acme WA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools set up through Acme WA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Washington or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Acme WAAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Acme WA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Acme home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you choose is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Acme WA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Acme WA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Acme WA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have associations with Acme WA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Acme healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Washington healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they pick will need to be within driving distance of their Acme WA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Acme WA area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
