They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Shawsville VA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Shawsville VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Shawsville VA hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Shawsville VAAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Shawsville VA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Shawsville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less expensive than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, make sure that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Shawsville VA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Shawsville VA area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Shawsville VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician schools you are reviewing have associations with Shawsville VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Shawsville health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Shawsville VA home. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Shawsville VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
