Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Pembroke VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Pembroke VA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Pembroke VA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Pembroke VA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Virginia or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Pembroke VAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Pembroke VA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Pembroke home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Pembroke VA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Pembroke VA area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Pembroke VA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the sonogram technician colleges you are interested in have partnerships with Pembroke VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Pembroke medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Pembroke VA home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Pembroke VA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.
