Sonogram Tech Work Description

Melfa VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Melfa VA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must frequently assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Melfa VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Melfa VA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Melfa VAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Melfa VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Melfa home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Melfa VA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Melfa VA area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Melfa VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Melfa VA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Melfa health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Melfa VA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Melfa VA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
