Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Earlysville VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Earlysville VA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of a sonogram technician can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Earlysville VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training component as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor with Earlysville VA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Earlysville VAAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Earlysville VA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Earlysville home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonography school you are considering, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Earlysville VA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Earlysville VA area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Earlysville VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have associations with Earlysville VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to get practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Earlysville health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Earlysville VA residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Earlysville VA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Earlysville, Virginia

Earlysville is an unincorporated community in Albemarle County, Virginia, United States,[1] roughly 9 miles (14 km) north of Charlottesville. It is named for John Early, who in 1822 bought just under 1,000 acres (4 km2) of land that now comprise a portion of the town.[2] Earlysville has a small central business district (pictured at right), with a grocery store, restaurant, dentist, daycare, mechanic, and several retail stores. As of January 2019 there remains only a thrift store, an auto repair shop, a United States Post Office, and a large number of churches. There is a nearby light industrial park and several small suburban developments. The bulk of the area is rural in character.

The community was the original location of Michie Tavern, before its 1927 relocation adjacent to Monticello.[3] Historic structures still located in Earlysville include Earlysville Union Church, Longwood, and Buck Mountain Episcopal Church.
