Cartersville VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Virginia or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Cartersville VAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Cartersville VA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Cartersville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Cartersville VA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Cartersville VA area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Cartersville VA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech programs you are evaluating have associations with Cartersville VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Cartersville healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Cartersville VA home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Cartersville VA area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
