Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Barboursville VA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Barboursville VA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Barboursville VA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many schools sponsor with Barboursville VA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Virginia or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Barboursville VAAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Barboursville VA hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Barboursville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Barboursville VA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Barboursville VA area. Clearly location will be significant if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Barboursville VA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are reviewing have relationships with Barboursville VA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Barboursville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Virginia healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Barboursville VA home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Barboursville VA area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Barboursville, Virginia

Barboursville is an unincorporated community in Albemarle, Orange, and Greene counties in the U.S. state of Virginia.[1] Barboursville is famous for being the birthplace of renowned American military commander and President Zachary Taylor.[2] It is also famous for the location of Barboursville, the home of James Barbour, the 19th Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, after which the community is named. The ruins of his home are now on land owned by one of the Piedmont region's wineries, Barboursville Vineyards.

In 1884 on Christmas Day sixty two years after it was built the Barboursville mansion was consumed by fire. This building was known as the only building in Orange County, VA to be designed by Thomas Jefferson himself. James Barbour was close friends with Jefferson and owned the building. Jefferson designed the building for Barbour with the former’s own home in mind. The house originally had a race track in front of it, but now it is home to one of Virginia’s first significant wineries. The ruins are now a tourist destination and a backdrop for Four County Players productions of "Shakespeare at the Ruins" in August.[4]

The Barbour family used the landscape where Barboursville Vineyards is located for pastoral farmland from the mid-18th Century and through the mid-20th Century. The land was preserved by James Barbour most efficiently by rotating crops and having sheep graze the fields. The winery sees their practice as a way to preserve traditional values even through the new Age of Agriculture in Virginia.[5]
