Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Enterprise UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Enterprise UT clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Enterprise UT ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Enterprise UT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Utah or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Programs

student attending online sonography class in Enterprise UTAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Enterprise UT outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Enterprise home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than traditional options. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are considering, confirm that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Enterprise UT ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Enterprise UT area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Enterprise UT health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Enterprise UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Enterprise healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they pick will have to be within driving distance of their Enterprise UT residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Enterprise UT area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.
