Sonographer Work Summary

Bountiful UT ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Bountiful UT clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Bountiful UT ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Bountiful UT hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Utah or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bountiful UTAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Bountiful UT hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Bountiful home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be decreased also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are looking at, verify that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Bountiful UT ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Bountiful UT area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Bountiful UT health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Bountiful UT hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bountiful healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Utah healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Bountiful UT home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  college you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bountiful UT area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Bountiful, Utah

Bountiful is a city in Davis County, Utah, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 42,552, a three percent increase over the 2000 figure of 41,301. The city grew rapidly during the suburb growth of the late 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s and was Davis County's largest city until 1985 when it was surpassed by Layton. Bountiful is Utah's 15th largest city.

Although a part of the Ogden-Clearfield Metropolitan Statistical Area, it serves as a bedroom community to Salt Lake City and the surrounding area. However, due to the very narrow entrance into Salt Lake County, roads between the counties often reach near-gridlock traffic during rush hour. The FrontRunner commuter rail has been running since April 2008, and the Legacy Parkway was opened on September 13, 2008. These were built to help alleviate the traffic load on Interstate 15 through the Bountiful area.

Bountiful was settled on September 27, 1847, by Perrigrine Sessions and his family. It was Utah's second settlement after Salt Lake City. It was known as both Sessions Settlement and North Canyon Ward before being named Bountiful in 1855. This city was so named both because of the city's reputation as a garden place and because "Bountiful" is the name of a city in the Book of Mormon (Alma 52:9).[3] Most of the settlers, and also many of the present inhabitants, are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). The city also shares 14 other religious institutions including a Catholic school and church, Saint Olaf School, established in 1959. The Bountiful Utah Temple was dedicated in 1995 by the LDS Church. A tabernacle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is also located in Bountiful.
