Ultrasound Tech Job Description

Thrall TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Thrall TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Thrall TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most sonographer schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Thrall TX clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Thrall TXAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Thrall TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be attended online in your Thrall home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on-campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonography program you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Thrall TX ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Thrall TX area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Thrall TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the sonogram technician schools you are interested in have associations with Thrall TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates form professional connections in the Thrall healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Thrall TX residence. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Thrall TX area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
