Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Odem TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Odem TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Odem TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Odem TX clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Schools

student attending online sonography class in Odem TXAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Odem TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Odem home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less costly than on campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Odem TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Odem TX area. Clearly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Odem TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry level openings.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have relationships with Odem TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Odem healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Odem TX home. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Odem TX area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
