Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Mont Belvieu TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Mont Belvieu TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Mont Belvieu TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Mont Belvieu TX hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Mont Belvieu TXAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Mont Belvieu TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Mont Belvieu home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Mont Belvieu TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Mont Belvieu TX area. Of course location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Mont Belvieu TX health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Mont Belvieu TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional connections in the Mont Belvieu healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Mont Belvieu TX residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Mont Belvieu TX area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
