Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Merkel TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Merkel TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Texas or whatever state you choose to work in.

Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

You will first probably want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Merkel TX area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you need ask each sonography college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Merkel TX health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Merkel TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Merkel healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Merkel TX residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Merkel TX area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
