Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Madisonville TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Madisonville TX clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Madisonville TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize with Madisonville TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Madisonville TXAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Madisonville TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Madisonville home. This is especially beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are many times less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Madisonville TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Madisonville TX area. Obviously location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Madisonville TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Madisonville TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Madisonville health care community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Madisonville TX home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that prefers to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Madisonville TX area, confirm that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
