Ultrasound Tech Occupation Summary

Collinsville TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Collinsville TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Collinsville TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Collinsville TX hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Collinsville TXAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Collinsville TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be attended online in your Collinsville home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are often less expensive than on-campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But just as with any sonographer college you are looking at, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Collinsville TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Collinsville TX area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Collinsville TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Collinsville TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Collinsville healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Collinsville TX home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Collinsville TX area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
