Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Chriesman TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Chriesman TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Chriesman TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Chriesman TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Texas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonogram Tech Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Chriesman TXAs earlier discussed, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Chriesman TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Chriesman home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with every sonography school you are looking at, confirm that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Colleges

Questions to ask Chriesman TX ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Chriesman TX area. Of course location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Chriesman TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have associations with Chriesman TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Chriesman health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Chriesman TX home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  program you ultimately choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Chriesman TX area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Chriesman, Texas

The community was the home of Perk Williams, fiddle player with Capitol Records artist Jimmy Heap and the Melody Masters, known for the Billboard Top Ten hit song "Release Me." Williams is celebrated at the annual "Perk Fest" at the Chriesman Community Center, located across the railroad tracks from the original downtown near the original cotton gin site, long since razed. An interesting structure that has been on two art tours is the "Bottle House", a quirky, eclectic cottage built out of thousands of wine bottles on the old Dunaway store site on Farm to Market Road 1363 near the Community Center. Although on private property, it is easily visible and a fun photo stop from across the fence.

Chriesman is now a virtual ghost town with only one original commercial building still standing – the old post office. It was originally an old school building and was long ago moved to its present site, and the upstairs was the Justice of the Peace court. Later the second story was removed and the post office was moved from inside the Speckman-Matejosky General Store next door. Next door on the other side was the Chriesman State Bank that closed in 1929, still solvent. This building burned not long after it closed. The old United Methodist Church stood until the Spring of 2018, when it was razed and the new church building was built in its place. The congregation still meets each Sunday morning for services. The Presbyterian Church was next door, but was razed in the 1960s. The John and Elsie (Baumann) Speckman country Victorian home is also still standing a few blocks from where his store was located (razed in 1974).

In 2017, The Yellow Prairie Emporium re-opened in the remodeled hardware store once owned by Frank Marek until a fire destroyed it in 1942. With its opening, there are hopes to stimulate the local economy and create a revival of the old ghost town. They serve as a local hangout and honor the old ways with their offerings and theme.
