Sonographer Job Description

Buffalo Gap TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Buffalo Gap TX hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may include:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Buffalo Gap TX ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many colleges organize with Buffalo Gap TX hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Technician Classes

student attending online sonography class in Buffalo Gap TXAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Buffalo Gap TX outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Buffalo Gap home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be decreased also. But just as with any sonography school you are considering, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Buffalo Gap TX ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Buffalo Gap TX area. Naturally location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Buffalo Gap TX employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are interested in have associations with Buffalo Gap TX clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Buffalo Gap health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Buffalo Gap TX residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Buffalo Gap TX area, confirm that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
