Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Boyd TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Boyd TX clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Boyd TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools organize with Boyd TX hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Texas or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Boyd TXAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can usually be fulfilled through an internship at a local Boyd TX outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Boyd home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Boyd TX ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Boyd TX area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Boyd TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are assessing have partnerships with Boyd TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Boyd healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will need to be within driving distance of their Boyd TX home. Students who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you opt to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Boyd TX area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
