Ultrasound Tech Occupation Description

Angleton TX ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Angleton TX hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work tasks of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Angleton TX ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve around 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that the majority of sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Angleton TX clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Texas or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Angleton TXAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Angleton TX hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Angleton home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, check that the online program you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Angleton TX ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Angleton TX area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Angleton TX employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have associations with Angleton TX hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Angleton medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Texas healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Angleton TX home. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Angleton TX area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
