Sonographer Occupation Summary

Dyer TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Dyer TN clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Dyer TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up through Dyer TN hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Tennessee or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Dyer TNAs aforementioned, almost all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Dyer TN hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be attended online in your Dyer home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online schools are often less costly than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Dyer TN ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Dyer TN area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Dyer TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech programs you are interested in have partnerships with Dyer TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Dyer medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will probably want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Dyer TN home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Dyer TN area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Dyer County, Tennessee

Dyer County was founded by a Private Act of Tennessee, passed on October 16, 1823.[4] The area was part of the territory in Tennessee that was previously legally occupied by Chickasaw Native American people ("Indian Lands").[5]

The county was named for Robert Henry Dyer[6] (circa 1774—1826). Dyer had been an army officer in the Creek War and War of 1812, and a cavalry colonel in the First Seminole War of 1818 before becoming a state senator. He was instrumental in the formation of the counties of Dyer and Madison County, Tennessee.[7]

Dyer County is bisected by U.S. Route 51, the older major highway connecting Memphis with Chicago from south to north. When upgraded to interstate standards, this road will become Interstate 69. To the west, Dyer County is connected to Missouri by Interstate 155 over the Mississippi River, providing the only highway connection, other than those at Memphis, between Tennessee and the states to the west of the river.
