Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Bluff City TN ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Bluff City TN clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Bluff City TN ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will typically require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Bluff City TN hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Tennessee or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Bluff City TNAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Bluff City TN hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Bluff City home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonography program you are looking at, check that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Bluff City TN ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bluff City TN area. Certainly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed review of their instructors and course materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Bluff City TN health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Bluff City TN hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great manner to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Bluff City medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Tennessee healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Bluff City TN home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Bluff City TN area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of work, illness or family obligations.
