Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Spearfish SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Spearfish SD clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job tasks of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Spearfish SD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools organize through Spearfish SD hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Dakota or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Spearfish SDAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Spearfish SD outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Spearfish home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are looking at, make sure that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Spearfish SD ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Spearfish SD area. Certainly location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous review of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Spearfish SD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Ask if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Spearfish SD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships a great way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Spearfish healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Spearfish SD home. Individuals who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Spearfish SD area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Spearfish, South Dakota

Before the Black Hills Gold Rush of 1876, the area was used by Native Americans (primarily bands of Sioux but others also ranged through the area). Once the gold rush started, the city was founded in 1876 at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon, and was originally called Queen City.[8] Spearfish grew as a supplier of foodstuffs to the mining camps in the hills. Even today, a significant amount of truck farming and market gardening still occurs in the vicinity.

In 1887, the accepted history of gold mining in the Black Hills was thrown into question by the discovery of what has become known as the Thoen Stone.[9] Discovered by Louis Thoen on the slopes of Lookout Mountain, the stone purports to be the last testament of Ezra Kind who, along with six others, entered the Black Hills in 1833 (at a time when whites were forbidden by law and treaty from entering the area), "got all the gold we could carry" in June 1834, and were subsequently "killed by Indians beyond the high hill." While it may seem unlikely that someone who has "lost my gun and nothing to eat and Indians hunting me" would take the time to carve his story in sandstone, there is corroborating historical evidence for the Ezra Kind party.[10]

In the 20th century, the history of Spearfish was tied very closely to mining and tourism. Architect Frank Lloyd Wright, who visited Spearfish Canyon in 1935, later called the area "unique and unparalleled elsewhere in our country," and wondered, "How is it that I've heard so little of this miracle and we, toward the Atlantic, have heard so much of the Grand Canyon when this is even more miraculous?"[11]
