Sonographer Work Summary

Scenic SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Scenic SD hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job functions of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Available

Scenic SD ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another option for individuals who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Scenic SD clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Dakota or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Scenic SDAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Scenic SD hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Scenic home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times less expensive than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials can be decreased also. But just as with any sonographer school you are looking at, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Scenic SD ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Scenic SD area. Obviously location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Scenic SD employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Scenic SD clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to get practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Scenic medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Scenic SD home. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule evening or weekend classes in the Scenic SD area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family obligations.

    Scenic, South Dakota

Scenic is an unincorporated community in Pennington County, South Dakota, United States. It is located within Scenic Township, which had a 2010 census population of 58 inhabitants. The community is located adjacent to the Badlands National Park, about 50 miles (80 km) southeast of Rapid City,[3] or about one hour by car,[4] along Highway 44.

In July 2011, the 12-acre (4.9 ha) town and surrounding area—about 46 acres (19 ha) total—was listed for sale at $799,000. The sale includes the post office (ZIP code 57780), Longhorn Saloon, a dance hall, bunkhouse, museum, and two stores.[3][6][7] It also includes a train depot[7] that is on an abandoned line that was part of the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul and Pacific Railroad and is the subject of a 104-mile (167 km) rails-to-trail project between Rapid City and Kadoka.[8]

In August 2011, the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC, English: Church of Christ), an independent, nontrinitarian Christian denomination based in the Philippines, bought the property for nearly $800,000, Pennington County records show.[9][10] The church never disclosed why it acquired the property. In 2014, Daniel Simmons-Ritchie of the Rapid City Journal wrote that the INC "has done little with the town since its purchase."[4]
