Sonographer Occupation Description

Lake Preston SD ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lake Preston SD hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Lake Preston SD ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by entering into an internship program which many schools sponsor with Lake Preston SD clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Dakota or whichever state you decide to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lake Preston SDAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Practical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Lake Preston SD outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the balance of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Lake Preston home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are many times less costly than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with any ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the right choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Lake Preston SD ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Lake Preston SD area. Obviously location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Lake Preston SD health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the ultrasound technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Lake Preston SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific means to get practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Lake Preston medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Lake Preston SD residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lake Preston SD area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
