Certainly location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Elk Point SD employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician schools you are assessing have partnerships with Elk Point SD hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional connections in the Elk Point healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Ask if the sonographer programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with South Dakota healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Elk Point SD home. Students who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you ultimately select can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Elk Point SD area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.
