Sonogram Tech Job Summary

Olar SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Olar SC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Available

Olar SC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finalize. Another option for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Olar SC hospitals and clinics. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in South Carolina or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Olar SCAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus lab or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Olar SC outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be attended online in your Olar home. This is especially convenient for those individuals that continue working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with any sonography college you are considering, verify that the online program you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Tech Programs

Questions to ask Olar SC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Olar SC area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound tech schools have earned some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Olar SC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are reviewing have relationships with Olar SC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to obtain hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Olar medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they pick will need to be within travelling distance of their Olar SC residence. Individuals who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can provide the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Olar SC area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
