Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Laurens SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Laurens SC clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Laurens SC ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize through Laurens SC hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in South Carolina or whatever state you elect to practice in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Laurens SCAs earlier discussed, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Laurens SC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Laurens home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Laurens SC ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Laurens SC area. Naturally location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Laurens SC health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are evaluating have relationships with Laurens SC clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may assist graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Laurens healthcare community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the college they choose will need to be within travelling distance of their Laurens SC residence. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit far in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally choose can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Laurens SC area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Laurens, South Carolina

Located in the Upstate region of South Carolina, the city of Laurens is named after John Laurens of Revolutionary War fame. It is part of the Greenville–Mauldin–Easley Metropolitan Statistical Area.

The town of Laurens was established by an act of the General Assembly on March 15, 1785 as a location for commercial activities. It was one of the six counties created from the Old Ninety-Six District of South Carolina.[4] Laurens was originally named Laurensville. On December 15, 1845, a charter was issued with the name of Laurensville. The first appearance of the town named Laurens was in an 1873 charter.[5] The town of Laurens was chartered in 1900 and in 1916. The town was named in the honor of Henry Laurens, the South Carolina statesman.[4]

The first inhabitants of Laurens were the Cherokee Indians. They used the land as their hunting and fighting ground. There has been evidence of broken potsherds, weapons, and a mound found linked to Cherokee culture on land now called Laurens. There were many treaties made with the Cherokee Indians over the land known as Laurens County dating back to 1721.[6] Before the America Revolution thousands of immigrants, mainly from Scotland and Ireland, settled in Laurens County. Later Laurens developed into a major intersection of commerce in the colonial America. In the Battle of Musgrove Mill, Laurens witnessed intense fighting.[4]
