Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Awendaw SC ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While many work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Awendaw SC hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Awendaw SC ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Awendaw SC clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in South Carolina or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Classes

student attending online sonography class in Awendaw SCAs aforementioned, nearly all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off-campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Awendaw SC hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Awendaw home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online schools are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But similarly as with any sonography school you are looking at, verify that the online school you select is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Awendaw SC ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Awendaw SC area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they offer internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography school before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Awendaw SC employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Awendaw SC hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Awendaw healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with South Carolina healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Awendaw SC home. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the sonographer  school you ultimately pick can provide the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Awendaw SC area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
