Ultrasound Technician Job Summary

Bradford RI ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Bradford RI hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Available

Bradford RI ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another option for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges sponsor with Bradford RI clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification prerequisites in Rhode Island or whichever state you decide to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Bradford RIAs aforementioned, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Bradford RI outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your Bradford home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently more affordable than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Bradford RI ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Bradford RI area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have received some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous assessment of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Bradford RI health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have partnerships with Bradford RI hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Bradford medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good indication that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Rhode Island healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within travelling distance of their Bradford RI residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Bradford RI area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
