Ultrasound Technician Work Description

Revloc PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job description, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Revloc PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily work duties of an ultrasound tech may include:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Revloc PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous colleges sponsor through Revloc PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Revloc PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all sonogram technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Revloc PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Revloc home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are reviewing, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Revloc PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the procedure of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Revloc PA area. Of course location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive review of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Revloc PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Revloc PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to obtain practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Revloc medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance offered? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will need to be within driving distance of their Revloc PA home. Those who have opted to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  college you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Revloc PA area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Revloc, Pennsylvania

Revloc is an unincorporated community and census-designated place[1] in Cambria Township, Cambria County, Pennsylvania. It is located near the intersections of US Routes 422 and 219, and is about 2 miles (3 km) west of the borough of Ebensburg, the Cambria County seat. As of the 2010 census, the population of Revloc was 570.[2]

The Revloc mine, located south of the community, was originally constructed by the Monroe Coal Company (also known as the Coleman & Weaver Company) in 1916–1917.[4] These mines later fell under the authority of Bethlehem Mining (BethEnergy), which operated them until the 1980s. In 1978, the Beaver County Times announced plans to reopen the mines after more than one year of closure, following a fire that resulted in over $10 million in losses.[4] The original structures of the Revloc mines are still in existence, including a boiler house, an office building, and a red brick 1940s-era bathhouse.

The community of Revloc was founded in 1917 as a coal patch town to house the workers of the mines. The community was home to a notable amount of Eastern European immigrants, including those from the Ukraine and Poland.
