Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Nicktown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Nicktown PA clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily job functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Nicktown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that almost all ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges sponsor through Nicktown PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Nicktown PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Nicktown PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Nicktown home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are often less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any ultrasound tech college you are considering, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Nicktown PA ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Nicktown PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification also. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still crucial to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the program is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Nicktown PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level openings.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have associations with Nicktown PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a great way to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Nicktown medical community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they decide on will have to be within travelling distance of their Nicktown PA residence. Students who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Nicktown PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family obligations.
