Sonogram Tech Job Description

Laurys Station PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Laurys Station PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Typical daily work tasks of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Offered

Laurys Station PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Laurys Station PA clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Laurys Station PAAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Clinical training can usually be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Laurys Station PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the balance of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Laurys Station home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online schools are frequently more affordable than on campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with any ultrasound tech program you are looking at, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Technician Programs

Questions to ask Laurys Station PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a college campus in the Laurys Station PA area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the schools are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have earned some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still important to verify that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Laurys Station PA employers will only hire graduates of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the sonogram tech schools you are reviewing have partnerships with Laurys Station PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to obtain practical experience in a clinical setting, they are also a way to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students form professional connections in the Laurys Station health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For a lot of students, the college they select will have to be within driving distance of their Laurys Station PA home. Individuals who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program as well.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Laurys Station PA area, verify that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss because of work, illness or family emergencies.

    Indigo Tunnel

Indigo Tunnel is an abandoned railroad tunnel in Allegany County, Maryland, located about 1 mile (1.6 km) east of Little Orleans. Built by the Western Maryland Railway (WM) in 1904, Indigo was the company's longest tunnel.[1] It was part of a major WM project to extend its rail system from Hagerstown west to Cumberland. This difficult route followed the Potomac River valley and involved construction of four additional tunnels and 23 bridges. The new rail line opened for traffic in 1906.[2]:44 Trains ran through the tunnel until the rail line was abandoned by the newly formed Chessie System in 1975, in favor of the parallel Baltimore and Ohio railroad line on the opposite side of the Potomac River.[2]:283

The tunnel was acquired by the National Park Service in 1980 and became part of Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park.[3] The Park Service has identified bat colonies living in the tunnel and has closed the tunnel to the public in order to protect the colonies.[4]
