Sonographer Work Description

Ingomar PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most practice in Ingomar PA clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound tech may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Available

Ingomar PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer colleges do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which many schools sponsor through Ingomar PA clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in Ingomar PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Ingomar PA outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Ingomar home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonography college you are reviewing, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Ingomar PA ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can initiate the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Ingomar PA area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into account, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, following are a few questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have acquired some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Ingomar PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Ingomar PA clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent manner to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Ingomar health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will have to be within commuting distance of their Ingomar PA residence. Students who have decided to attend classes online obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Ingomar PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to illness, work or family obligations.
