Sonogram Tech Occupation Description

Frederick PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Frederick PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech can include:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely gauge the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Frederick PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools organize with Frederick PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to work in.

Sonographer Online Schools

student attending online sonography class in Frederick PAAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Clinical training can usually be satisfied through an internship at a local Frederick PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be attended online in your Frederick home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are often less expensive than on campus options. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are reviewing, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

Topics to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask Frederick PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Frederick PA area. Certainly location will be critical if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are other things that you should also take into consideration, for instance if the colleges are accredited and if they offer internship programs. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Programs Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to verify that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Frederick PA health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Frederick PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific manner to get hands on training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may assist graduates and students form professional relationships in the Frederick health care community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Frederick PA home. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of person that prefers to sit far in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Frederick PA area, check that they are offered. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to carry. Also, find out what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (born Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey; c. February 1818[4] – February 20, 1895[5]) was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. After escaping from slavery in Maryland, he became a national leader of the abolitionist movement in Massachusetts and New York, gaining note for his oratory[6] and incisive antislavery writings. In his time, he was described by abolitionists as a living counter-example to slaveholders' arguments that slaves lacked the intellectual capacity to function as independent American citizens.[7][8] Northerners at the time found it hard to believe that such a great orator had once been a slave.[9]

Douglass wrote several autobiographies. He described his experiences as a slave in his 1845 autobiography, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which became a bestseller, and was influential in promoting the cause of abolition, as was his second book, My Bondage and My Freedom (1855). After the Civil War, Douglass remained an active campaigner against slavery and wrote his last autobiography, Life and Times of Frederick Douglass. First published in 1881 and revised in 1892, three years before his death, it covered events during and after the Civil War. Douglass also actively supported women's suffrage, and held several public offices. Without his approval, Douglass became the first African American nominated for Vice President of the United States as the running mate and Vice Presidential nominee of Victoria Woodhull, on the Equal Rights Party ticket.[10]

Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all peoples, whether black, female, Native American, or recent immigrant. He was also a believer in dialogue and in making alliances across racial and ideological divides, and in the liberal values of the U.S. Constitution. When radical abolitionists, under the motto "No Union with Slaveholders", criticized Douglass' willingness to engage in dialogue with slave owners, he replied: "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong."[11]
