Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Codorus PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Codorus PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education courses on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

Codorus PA ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. Something to bear in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Codorus PA hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whichever state you choose to practice in.

Sonographer Online Degrees

student attending online sonography class in Codorus PAAs previously mentioned, virtually all ultrasound technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Codorus PA outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. However the balance of the classes and training may be attended online in your Codorus home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials may be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech college you are looking at, confirm that the online program you select is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree could be the right option for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Codorus PA ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have decided on which certificate or degree that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Codorus PA area. Naturally location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you should also take into consideration, such as if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most ultrasound tech colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not accessible for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Codorus PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have relationships with Codorus PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional connections in the Codorus medical community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a number of students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Codorus PA residence. Individuals who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges generally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or hide in the crowd, you will likely prefer a smaller class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Codorus PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.

    Codorus State Park

Codorus State Park is a 3,500-acre (1,400 ha) Pennsylvania state park in Heidelberg, Manheim, Penn, and West Manheim Townships in southwestern York County, Pennsylvania in the United States. The park was created around Lake Marburg, an artificial lake covering 1,275 acres (516 ha), and is named for Codorus Creek, which forms the lake. Codorus State Park is located on Pennsylvania Route 216, 3 miles (4.8 km) from the borough of Hanover.

When Europeans first reached the land that became Codorus State Park, it was the territory of Susquehannock Indians, a powerful tribe that controlled much of the land near the Susquehanna River. Wars and the push of settlers, most of which were German farmers, led to the demise of the Susquehannocks, but industry soon followed.

Built in 1762, Mary Ann Furnace is believed to be the first charcoal furnace built on the western side of the Susquehanna River. The furnace supplied cannonballs and grapeshot for the continental army and employed Hessian prisoners to run the ironworks while many of the available workforce were off fighting the British. Nothing remains of the ironworks except memories.
