Boyertown PA sonographer performing ultrasoundOnce you have decided to obtain an ultrasound technician degree near Boyertown PA, it’s time to begin the procedure of selecting a college. To begin with, you have to find the right program that will furnish the proper instruction to become a qualified professional. So it’s extremely important that you research each school in order to evaluate and compare your choices. But exactly where does one start? A number of prospective students will begin by looking for schools that are within travelling distance of their homes and then by comparing tuition. Certainly location and cost need to be considered when making a decision, but there are additional significant factors also. For example, if the ultrasound technician schools have earned accreditation or if they provide internships. These and additional qualifiers will be covered more in detail later in this post. But first, let’s go over what a sonogram tech does and the credentials and online education options that are offered.

Ultrasound Technician Occupation Summary

Boyertown PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most practice in Boyertown PA hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Preserving records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Boyertown PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the option to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician schools do have a clinical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be satisfied by taking part in an internship program which many schools set up with Boyertown PA hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Pennsylvania or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonogram Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Boyertown PAAs earlier discussed, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at an approved off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Boyertown PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Boyertown home. This is especially beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on campus options. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every ultrasound tech school you are looking at, verify that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the right choice for you.

What to Ask Ultrasound Technician Schools

Questions to ask Boyertown PA ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Boyertown PA area. Clearly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional things that you should also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonographer college before deciding.

Are the Ultrasound Tech Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have earned some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive assessment of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not available for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Boyertown PA health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the sonogram tech colleges you are interested in have associations with Boyertown PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to obtain hands on training in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional connections in the Boyertown medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will probably wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they pick will have to be within commuting distance of their Boyertown PA residence. Students who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of student that prefers to sit way in the back of class or hide in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to talk with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Boyertown PA area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
