Sonogram Tech Work Summary

Annville PA ultrasound tech with patientThere are various professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Although a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Annville PA hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job duties of a sonogram tech can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Annville PA ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to complete. Another option for those who have already earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Annville PA clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Pennsylvania or whatever state you decide to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Annville PAAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Annville PA hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be accessed online in your Annville home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online school may be the right choice for you.

Topics to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Annville PA ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on which degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of evaluating and comparing ultrasound tech colleges. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Annville PA area. Clearly location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they provide internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician colleges have obtained some type of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still important to make sure that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in securing financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Annville PA employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Annville PA hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a great manner to obtain practical training in a clinical setting, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Annville health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Pennsylvania healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the school they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Annville PA residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will likely prefer a small class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while attending school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Annville PA area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
