Sonographer Work Summary

Scappoose OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs practice as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Scappoose OR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Typical daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on a regular basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Available

Scappoose OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the choice to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at as long as four years to finish. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most sonographer programs do have a practical training component as part of their course of study. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor through Scappoose OR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing requirements in Oregon or whichever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Classes

student attending online sonography class in Scappoose ORAs aforementioned, virtually all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can receive a degree or certificate online, a substantial part of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus lab or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Scappoose OR hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Scappoose home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while getting their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less costly than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be reduced also. But similarly as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, make sure that the online program you select is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonography Colleges

Questions to ask Scappoose OR ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of certificate or degree that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing sonogram technician colleges. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a school campus in the Scappoose OR area. Naturally location will be important if you select the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier also. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? A large number of sonogram technician colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still imperative to confirm that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the school is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And a number of Scappoose OR health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are reviewing have relationships with Scappoose OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional relationships in the Scappoose healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new profession can be challenging without assistance. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and great relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they choose will have to be within commuting distance of their Scappoose OR residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the type of person that likes to sit way in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Small classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Scappoose OR area, confirm that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family emergencies.
