Ultrasound Technician Occupation Description

Manning OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Manning OR clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily work tasks of an ultrasound technician can consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must regularly assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degrees Offered

Manning OR ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the option to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally require around 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that almost all sonographer programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges organize with Manning OR clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to satisfy the certification or licensing prerequisites in Oregon or whatever state you choose to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in Manning ORAs earlier discussed, virtually all ultrasound technician colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Manning OR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Manning home. This is especially convenient for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. Plus online colleges are often more affordable than on-campus alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting may be reduced as well. But just as with every sonographer school you are reviewing, verify that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonogram Tech Programs

Questions to ask Manning OR ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of evaluating and comparing ultrasound technician colleges. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Manning OR area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into account, for instance if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are some questions that you need ask each sonography college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram tech schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed examination of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Manning OR employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry-level jobs.

Are Internships Provided? Ask if the sonogram tech colleges you are evaluating have relationships with Manning OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive practical experience in a clinical setting, they are additionally a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they may help graduates and students establish professional relationships in the Manning healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that first job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are reviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Manning OR home. Those who have chosen to attend classes online obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges commonly charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a smaller class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with a few of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program as well.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must confirm that the sonographer  school you finally choose can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Manning OR area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss because of illness, work or family obligations.

    Chelsea Manning

Chelsea Elizabeth Manning[4] (born Bradley Edward Manning, December 17, 1987) is an American activist[5] and whistleblower. She is a former United States Army soldier who was convicted by court-martial in July 2013 of violations of the Espionage Act and other offenses, after disclosing to WikiLeaks nearly 750,000 classified, or unclassified but sensitive, military and diplomatic documents,[6] and was imprisoned between 2010 and 2017. A trans woman, Manning released a statement in 2013 explaining she had a female gender identity since childhood and wanted to be known as Chelsea Manning. She also expressed a desire to begin hormone replacement therapy.[7]

Assigned in 2009 to an Army unit in Iraq as an intelligence analyst, Manning had access to classified databases. In early 2010, she leaked classified information to WikiLeaks and confided this to Adrian Lamo, an online acquaintance.[8] Lamo indirectly informed the Army's Criminal Investigation Command, and Manning was arrested in May that same year.[9] The material included videos of the July 12, 2007, Baghdad airstrike, and the 2009 Granai airstrike in Afghanistan; 251,287 U.S. diplomatic cables;[10] and 482,832 Army reports that came to be known as the "Iraq War Logs"[11] and "Afghan War Diary".[12] The material was published by WikiLeaks and its media partners between April 2010 and April 2011.

Manning was charged with 22 offenses, including aiding the enemy, which was the most serious charge and could have resulted in a death sentence.[13] She was held at the Marine Corps Brig, Quantico in Virginia, from July 2010 to April 2011, under Prevention of Injury status—which entailed de facto solitary confinement and other restrictions that caused domestic and international concern[14]—before being transferred to the Joint Regional Correctional Facility at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where she could interact with other detainees.[15] She pleaded guilty in February 2013 to 10 of the charges.[16] The trial on the remaining charges began on June 3, 2013, and on July 30 she was convicted of 17 of the original charges and amended versions of four others, but was acquitted of aiding the enemy.[17] She was sentenced to serve a 35-year sentence at the maximum-security U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth.[18][19] On January 17, 2017, President Barack Obama commuted Manning's sentence to nearly seven years of confinement dating from her arrest on May 27, 2010.[20][21] Manning now earns a living through speaking engagements.[22]
