Sonographer Job Description

Government Camp OR ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job description, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority work in Government Camp OR hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that level of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degree Programs Offered

Government Camp OR ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the option to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to complete. Another alternative for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to consider is that the majority of sonographer programs do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Government Camp OR hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to comply with the certification or licensing requirements in Oregon or whichever state you decide to work in.

Online Sonogram Tech Schools

student attending online sonography class in Government Camp ORAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a practical component to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant portion of the training will be either conducted in an on campus laboratory or at an authorized off campus medical care provider. Clinical training can typically be satisfied by means of an internship at a local Government Camp OR hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the classes and training may be attended online in your Government Camp home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for study materials and commuting may be decreased also. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, verify that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then an online degree may be the ideal choice for you.

You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the Government Camp OR area. Certainly location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. Therefore in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. Even so, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive evaluation of their teachers and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And a number of Government Camp OR employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level jobs.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have relationships with Government Camp OR clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to get hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students form professional relationships in the Government Camp medical community and help with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will most likely wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without support. Ask if the sonographer programs you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have sizable networks and good relationships with Oregon healthcare employers. It also confirms that their students are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For a number of students, the college they select will have to be within commuting distance of their Government Camp OR residence. Individuals who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges typically charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the ultrasound tech  college you ultimately select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule night or weekend classes in the Government Camp OR area, verify that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
