Sonographer Work Summary

Stratford OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same primary job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Stratford OK clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of an ultrasound tech can consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Readying the ultrasound machines for usage and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly gauge the safety and performance of their machines. They also are held to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education courses on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

Stratford OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to four years to complete. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician colleges do have a clinical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many colleges set up through Stratford OK clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Stratford OKAs aforementioned, nearly all ultrasound tech schools have a practical component to their programs. So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either carried out in an on campus lab or at an approved off campus facility. Clinical training can usually be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Stratford OK hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the training and classes may be attended online in your Stratford home. This is particularly convenient for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online schools are often more affordable than on-campus options. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online program you choose is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Stratford OK ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can begin the process of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a school campus in the Stratford OK area. Naturally location will be significant if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification also. But there are additional variables that you should also take into consideration, such as if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each sonography program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have received some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to make sure that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are often not accessible for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Stratford OK employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level positions.

Are Internships Sponsored? Ask if the sonogram technician colleges you are evaluating have associations with Stratford OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Stratford healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech programs you are assessing have job placement programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they select will have to be within travelling distance of their Stratford OK home. Individuals who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to trouble themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may have to pay a higher tuition. State colleges commonly charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges usually charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the type of student that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with some of the instructors and students to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the School Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the ultrasound tech  school you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you choose to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Stratford OK area, check that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.

    Stratford, Oklahoma

Stratford is a town in Garvin County, Oklahoma, United States. Prior to Oklahoma statehood in 1907, the town existed under different names and was in the Chickasaw Nation in a geographic region known as Indian Territory. Peach orchards abound in and around the town. The population was 1,525 at the 2010 census.

Stratford was originally the town of McGee, which was established in 1891.[3] At the time, it was part of the Chickasaw Nation in an unorganized geographic region of the United States known as Indian Territory[4] In 1906 the Oklahoma Central Railroad built the railroad two miles south of McGee.[3] The town placed its buildings on wagons and wheeled them down to the train tracks. The new town was first named Walling, but by October 1906 the name was changed to Stratford.[3] Stratford is known as the Peach Capital of the World and holds its Peach Festival, annual rodeo, and car show the third Saturday each July. The festival has been held since 1976, while the rodeo dates back to 1936.[3]

Stratford is approximately halfway between Pauls Valley, Oklahoma and Ada, Oklahoma along State Highway 19, where it intersects U.S. Highway 177.[3] Its geographic coordinates are 34°47′46″N 96°57′37″W / 34.79611°N 96.96028°W / 34.79611; -96.96028 (34.796077, -96.960342).[5]
