Ultrasound Technician Job Description

Lindsay OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. Most work in Lindsay OK hospitals, clinics, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Standard daily job duties of an ultrasound technician may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Moving patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining need for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must frequently gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and remain up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Lindsay OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech students have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually require around 18 months to 2 years to complete depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as four years to finalize. Another option for those who have already obtained a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related medical field, you can instead choose a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that almost all sonographer schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which many schools organize with Lindsay OK hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to fulfill the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whatever state you choose to practice in.

Online Sonographer Colleges

So while you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be fulfilled through an internship at a local Lindsay OK hospital, outpatient clinic or private practice. However the rest of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Lindsay home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while getting their degrees. Plus online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be decreased as well. But just as with every sonographer program you are considering, make sure that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially crucial for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Subjects to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Lindsay OK ultrasound technician schoolsOnce you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather access classes online or travel to a college campus in the Lindsay OK area. Of course location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition no doubt will be an initial qualifier as well. But there are additional variables that you must also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? A large number of ultrasound technician schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still imperative to verify that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it can also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Lindsay OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level openings.

Are Internship Programs Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have associations with Lindsay OK hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent manner to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a means to fulfill the practical training requirement for most programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the Lindsay healthcare community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be difficult without help. Ask if the ultrasound tech schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For a lot of students, the college they decide on will have to be within driving distance of their Lindsay OK home. Students who have opted to attend classes online obviously will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you might need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit far in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably prefer a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the Lindsay OK area, check that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would need to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss due to illness, work or family emergencies.

    Lindsay, Oklahoma

Lindsay is a city in Garvin County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 2,840 at the 2010 census.[3] It once promoted itself as "The Broomcorn Capital of the World" but no longer uses that slogan, as broomcorn is no longer raised in the area.[4]

Lindsay was founded in January 1902, when the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe and the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific railroad companies linked their lines halfway between Chickasha and Pauls Valley. Lindsay was named after Lewis Lindsay, a local area farmer who donated 440 acres (180 ha) of land for the townsite.[5]

    Lindsay is located in northwestern Garvin County at 34°50′14″N 97°36′27″W / 34.83722°N 97.60750°W / 34.83722; -97.60750 (34.837280, -97.607537).[6] The town's northern border follows the McClain County line.
