Elk City OK ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job description, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. The majority work in Elk City OK hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job duties of a sonogram tech may involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for testing and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable

  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for supplemental testing

Sonographers must frequently evaluate the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degrees Available

Elk City OK ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will usually take about 18 months to 2 years to finish dependent on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have received a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to consider is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It often may be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools sponsor with Elk City OK clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from any of the degree or certificate programs, you will then need to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Oklahoma or whatever state you elect to work in.

Sonographer Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Elk City OKAs earlier discussed, virtually all sonogram tech colleges have a practical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus lab or at a sponsored off campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled through an internship at a local Elk City OK outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the rest of the classes and training may be accessed online in your Elk City home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. In addition online schools are many times less expensive than on-campus alternatives. Expenditures for commuting and study materials may be reduced as well. But similarly as with any sonographer college you are considering, confirm that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly crucial for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the comfort of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Points to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Elk City OK ultrasound technician schoolsAs soon as you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of evaluating and comparing sonogram technician schools. You may first want to decide whether you would rather access classes online or commute to a college campus in the Elk City OK area. Obviously location will be important if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. Therefore in order to carry out your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonographer school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Tech Colleges Accredited? A large number of sonogram tech colleges have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still important to confirm that the school and program are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a rigorous examination of their teachers and course materials. If the college is online it may also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online education. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also help in getting financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Elk City OK health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited college for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound tech programs you are evaluating have partnerships with Elk City OK clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent way to receive hands on experience in a clinical setting, they are also a means to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional relationships in the Elk City health care community and assist with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help offered? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have large networks and good relationships with Oklahoma healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within driving distance of their Elk City OK home. Students who have chosen to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a program that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that prefers to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will likely want a smaller class size. Smaller classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program as well.

Can the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you finally pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Elk City OK area, make sure that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, check if that is an option and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, learn what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.

    Elk City, Oklahoma

Elk City is a city in Beckham County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 11,693 at the 2010 census,[3] and the population was estimated at 12,717 in 2015.[4] Elk City is located on Interstate 40 and Historic U.S. Route 66 in western Oklahoma, approximately 110 miles (180 km) west of Oklahoma City and 150 miles (240 km) east of Amarillo, Texas.

In 1541, Francisco Vásquez de Coronado became the first known European to pass through the area. The Spanish conquistador was traveling northeast across the prairie in search of a place called Quivira, a city said to be fabulously wealthy with gold. Because Coronado's route across the plains is speculative,[5] it is quite possible that the expedition passed through present-day Elk City or the nearby area.

Elk City's history dates back to the days immediately following the opening of the Cheyenne-Arapaho reservation in western Oklahoma Territory on April 19, 1892, when the first white settlers made their appearance. Prior to this time, many early ranchers had driven cattle over the Great Western Cattle Trail from Texas to Dodge City, Kansas, the present townsite of Elk City being in the direct path of that famous trail.
