Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Summit Station OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called sonogram techs, diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers) and ultrasound technologists. No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. While many work as generalists there are specializations within the profession, for instance in pediatrics and cardiology. The majority practice in Summit Station OH hospitals, clinics, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily job functions of a sonogram tech may consist of:

  • Preserving records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for additional testing

Sonographers must regularly evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as medical practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and remain current with medical knowledge, they are required to enroll in continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Technician Degree Programs Offered

Summit Station OH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally involve around 18 months to 2 years to accomplish depending on the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to complete. Another alternative for individuals who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a related health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to complete. Something to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by entering into an internship program which numerous colleges organize through Summit Station OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from any of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whatever state you elect to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Summit Station OHAs aforementioned, almost all sonogram technician colleges have a practical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can typically be satisfied through an internship at a local Summit Station OH outpatient clinic, hospital or private practice. But the remainder of the classes and training can be accessed online in your Summit Station home. This is particularly beneficial for those students that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times more affordable than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be lessened also. But similarly as with every sonographer college you are reviewing, check that the online school you enroll in is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for licensing, certification and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes away from the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school could be the ideal option for you.

Subjects to Ask Sonogram Tech Colleges

Questions to ask Summit Station OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to earn, you can start the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram technician schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Summit Station OH area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are other factors that you must also take into consideration, for example if the programs are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can make your final selection, following are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? The majority of sonogram technician schools have acquired some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. Nevertheless, it’s still imperative to confirm that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs obtaining accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous examination of their instructors and educational materials. If the school is online it might also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets distance or online learning. All accrediting organizations should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a superior education, accreditation will also assist in acquiring financial aid and student loans, which are often not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous Summit Station OH health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internships Offered? Inquire if the ultrasound tech schools you are evaluating have associations with Summit Station OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only a great means to obtain hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to satisfy the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates establish professional connections in the Summit Station healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be difficult without assistance. Find out if the sonographer schools you are considering have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their students are well regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the school they choose will need to be within commuting distance of their Summit Station OH residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes obviously will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to keep in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly want a small class size. Small classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your final determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  program you finally pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is especially important if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Summit Station OH area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of work, illness or family obligations.
