Sonographer Job Summary

Rockbridge OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to carry out diagnostic ultrasound testing on patients. While a number of techs work as generalists there are specializations within the field, for instance in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority practice in Rockbridge OH clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily work functions of an ultrasound tech can include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for usage and then cleaning and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Using equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for further testing

Sonographers must regularly assess the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Sonogram Tech Degree Programs Available

Rockbridge OH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally take around 18 months to 2 years to complete based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at up to four years to finish. Another option for individuals who have previously received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to consider is that the majority of ultrasound technician programs do have a practical training element as part of their curriculum. It can often be satisfied by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through Rockbridge OH clinics and hospitals. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Ohio or whatever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Tech Online Programs

student attending online sonography class in Rockbridge OHAs previously mentioned, almost all ultrasound tech schools have a clinical requirement to their programs. So although you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a significant portion of the training will be either carried out in an on campus laboratory or at an approved off campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Rockbridge OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the balance of the training and classes can be attended online in your Rockbridge home. This is especially beneficial for those students that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less expensive than traditional alternatives. Expenses for study materials and commuting can be lessened as well. But similarly as with every sonographer program you are considering, check that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly important for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are disciplined enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Rockbridge OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of reviewing and comparing ultrasound technician schools. You will first probably want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Rockbridge OH area. Clearly location will be critical if you choose the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an initial qualification as well. But there are other variables that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they provide internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are several questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech college prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? The majority of ultrasound technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still important to confirm that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through an extensive review of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which focuses on distance or online learning. All accrediting agencies should be acknowledged by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. In addition to ensuring a quality education, accreditation will also assist in obtaining financial assistance and student loans, which are frequently not offered for non-accredited colleges. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And numerous Rockbridge OH health facilities will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Inquire if the sonogram tech colleges you are assessing have partnerships with Rockbridge OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships a terrific manner to get practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they may help students and graduates develop professional connections in the Rockbridge healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Help available? You will undoubtedly want to hit the ground running after graduating, but getting that first job in a new field can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job placement programs and what their success rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the school they select will need to be within commuting distance of their Rockbridge OH residence. Students who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. One thing to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges often charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

How Big are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or hide in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the ultrasound technician program also.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while you attend school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Rockbridge OH area, make certain that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would need to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
