Sonogram Tech Job Summary

North Kingsville OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound procedures on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in North Kingsville OH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job functions of an ultrasound technician may involve:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and ensuring their comfort
  • Operating equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and identifying necessity for additional testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the safety and performance of their equipment. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that level of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are required to complete continuing education programs on an ongoing basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Available

North Kingsville OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound tech enrollees have the opportunity to earn either an Associate or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally involve about 18 months to 2 years to finish depending on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finalize. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health field, you can enroll in a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to finish. One thing to bear in mind is that almost all ultrasound technician colleges do have a practical training component as a portion of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through North Kingsville OH clinics and hospitals. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to comply with the licensing or certification prerequisites in Ohio or whatever state you choose to work in.

Online Ultrasound Tech Programs

student attending online sonography class in North Kingsville OHAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram technician schools have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can receive a degree or certificate online, a significant part of the training will be either held in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off-campus medical care provider. Practical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local North Kingsville OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the remainder of the training and classes can be attended online in your North Kingsville home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while getting their degrees. Plus online colleges are many times more affordable than on-campus options. Costs for commuting and study materials may be reduced also. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, confirm that the online program you choose is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially important for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Colleges

Questions to ask North Kingsville OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined which degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the process of evaluating and comparing sonogram tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the North Kingsville OH area. Of course location will be significant if you select the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier also. But there are other variables that you should also take into consideration, for example if the schools are accredited and if they sponsor internships. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Tech Programs Accredited? A large number of ultrasound tech schools have earned some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still important to make sure that the school and program are accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone a detailed evaluation of their instructors and course materials. If the college is online it might also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Besides guaranteeing a premium education, accreditation will also help in obtaining financial aid and student loans, which are frequently not accessible for non-accredited schools. Accreditation may also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And numerous North Kingsville OH health facilities will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry level jobs.

Are Internships Offered? Find out if the ultrasound technician colleges you are reviewing have associations with North Kingsville OH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent means to receive hands on experience in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for most programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help students and graduates form professional relationships in the North Kingsville medical community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will undoubtedly wish to secure employment quickly after graduation, but finding that first job in a new field can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer programs you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good sign that the schools have substantial networks and good relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also corroborates that their students are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the College Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their North Kingsville OH residence. Those who have decided to attend online classes naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges normally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that live outside of their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the sort of person that likes to sit far in the back of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Smaller classes enable more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the schools you are researching what the average student to teacher ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may want to monitor one or more classes before making your ultimate decision. This will also give you a chance to converse with several of the instructors and students to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound technician program as well.

Does the Program Accommodate your Schedule? And last you need to confirm that the sonographer  school you finally select can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly essential if you opt to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the North Kingsville OH area, make sure that they are offered. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, find out if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the procedure is for making up any classes that you might miss due to work, illness or family emergencies.
