Sonographer Work Summary

New Lebanon OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are multiple professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also called ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in New Lebanon OH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Routine daily job tasks of a sonogram tech may include:

  • Maintaining records of patient case histories and details of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then cleaning and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Operating equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Reviewing the results and determining need for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely evaluate the safety and performance of their machines. They also must adhere to a high professional standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to maintain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degrees Offered

New Lebanon OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician enrollees have the choice to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to complete dependent on the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another option for those who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to bear in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as a portion of their course of study. It often may be fulfilled by participating in an internship program which numerous schools set up through New Lebanon OH hospitals and clinics. When you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to fulfill the licensing or certification prerequisites in Ohio or whichever state you elect to work in.

Ultrasound Technician Online Classes

student attending online sonography class in New Lebanon OHAs earlier discussed, almost all sonogram tech schools have a clinical component to their programs. So although you can earn a certificate or degree online, a significant part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied by means of an internship at a local New Lebanon OH outpatient clinic, hospital or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your New Lebanon home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that keep working while obtaining their degrees. Plus online programs are many times less costly than on campus alternatives. Expenses for commuting and study materials may be lessened also. But just as with any sonography college you are reviewing, verify that the online school you choose is accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and job placement (more on accreditation later). So if you are motivated enough to attend classes outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes may be the right option for you.

Questions to Ask Ultrasound Tech Schools

Questions to ask New Lebanon OH ultrasound technician schoolsWhen you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can begin the procedure of assessing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you will attend classes online or commute to a school campus in the New Lebanon OH area. Of course location will be significant if you choose the latter, and the price of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional variables that you should also take into account, for example if the programs are accredited and if they provide internship programs. So in order to perform your due diligence so that you can make your ultimate selection, following are several questions that you need ask each sonography program prior to making a decision.

Are the Ultrasound Technician Schools Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to verify that the program and school are accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a detailed assessment of their teachers and course materials. If the school is online it might also obtain accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a quality education, accreditation will also assist in getting financial aid and student loans, which are many times not offered for non-accredited programs. Accreditation might also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many New Lebanon OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited school for entry level positions.

Are Internship Programs Sponsored? Find out if the ultrasound technician programs you are interested in have relationships with New Lebanon OH clinics or hospitals for internship programs. Internships are not only a terrific means to obtain practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a way to fulfill the clinical training requirement for the majority of programs. As an ancillary benefit, they can help students and graduates develop professional connections in the New Lebanon health care community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Help provided? You will most likely want to secure employment quickly after graduating, but getting that initial job in a new field can be challenging without support. Find out if the ultrasound tech schools you are interviewing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are a good indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also confirms that their graduates are highly regarded and in demand.

Where is the School Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their New Lebanon OH home. Those who have opted to attend classes online naturally will not have to concern themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of local internships will be of importance. Something to consider is that if you choose to enroll in a school that is out of state or perhaps out of your local area, you may need to pay a higher tuition. State colleges generally charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges normally charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

How Large are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of person that likes to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably want a small class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and one-on-one instruction. Ask the colleges you are reviewing what the typical teacher to student ratio is for their classes. If practical you may want to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you an opportunity to converse with some of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you must verify that the ultrasound tech  college you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you decide to continue working while attending classes. If you need to schedule night or weekend classes in the New Lebanon OH area, make certain that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, verify if that is an alternative and how many credit hours or courses you would have to enroll in. Also, ask what the protocol is for making up any classes that you might miss as a result of illness, work or family obligations.
