Ultrasound Technician Work Summary

Maineville OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are several professional titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). No matter what their title is, they all have the same primary job function, which is to perform diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though a number of techs work as generalists there are specialties within the field, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. Most work in Maineville OH clinics, hospitals, private practices or outpatient diagnostic imaging centers. Routine daily job functions of a sonogram technician may consist of:

  • Keeping records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Prepping the ultrasound machines for use and then sterilizing and re-calibrating them
  • Escorting patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while minimizing patient exposure to sound waves
  • Assessing results and identifying need for additional testing

Sonographers must routinely gauge the safety and performance of their equipment. They also are held to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. So as to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay current with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education programs on a regular basis.

Ultrasound Tech Degree Programs Offered

Maineville OH ultrasound technician performing sonographySonogram technician enrollees have the opportunity to acquire either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will normally require about 18 months to 2 years to accomplish based upon the course load and program. A Bachelor’s Degree will take longer at up to 4 years to complete. Another alternative for those who have previously earned a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant medical sector, you can enroll in a certificate program that will require just 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that most ultrasound technician programs do have a clinical training element as part of their course of study. It can often be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which numerous colleges set up with Maineville OH hospitals and clinics. Once you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then have to satisfy the licensing or certification requirements in Ohio or whichever state you elect to work in.

Online Sonographer Schools

student attending online sonography class in Maineville OHAs previously mentioned, almost all sonogram tech colleges have a clinical component to their programs. So while you can earn a degree or certificate online, a substantial portion of the training will be either carried out in an on-campus laboratory or at a sponsored off-campus facility. Practical training can typically be fulfilled by means of an internship at a local Maineville OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. However the remainder of the training and classes may be accessed online in your Maineville home. This is particularly convenient for those students that keep working while getting their degrees. In addition online colleges are frequently less costly than on campus alternatives. Costs for commuting and study materials can be reduced also. But similarly as with any sonographer program you are looking at, confirm that the online school you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly regarded accrediting organizations is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is especially significant for licensing, certification and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then online classes could be the ideal choice for you.

Points to Ask Sonography Programs

Questions to ask Maineville OH ultrasound technician schoolsAfter you have determined the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can start the procedure of reviewing and comparing sonogram tech colleges. You may first want to decide whether you would rather attend classes online or travel to a college campus in the Maineville OH area. Clearly location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the price of tuition no doubt will be an important qualification as well. But there are additional things that you must also take into consideration, such as if the colleges are accredited and if they sponsor internship programs. So in order to complete your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are some questions that you may want to ask each sonographer program before deciding.

Are the Sonogram Technician Programs Accredited? Most sonogram technician schools have obtained some form of accreditation, whether regional or national. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly regarded accrediting agencies in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Schools earning accreditation from the JRC-DMS have gone through a rigorous evaluation of their teachers and educational materials. If the college is online it can also receive accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance learning. All accrediting agencies should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with guaranteeing a superior education, accreditation will also help in acquiring financial assistance and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited schools. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for certification and licensing as required. And many Maineville OH employers will only hire a graduate of an accredited school for entry-level openings.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Ask if the ultrasound technician programs you are assessing have partnerships with Maineville OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Not only are internships an excellent way to receive hands on training in a clinical environment, they are additionally a way to fulfill the practical training requirement for the majority of programs. As a supplemental benefit, they can help graduates and students develop professional connections in the Maineville healthcare community and assist with job placement.

Is Job Placement Assistance available? You will probably wish to secure employment quickly after graduating, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without help. Find out if the sonographer schools you are assessing have job assistance programs and what their placement rates are. Rapid and high placement rates are an excellent indication that the schools have sizable networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are well regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For many students, the college they decide on will need to be within commuting distance of their Maineville OH residence. Those who have chosen to attend online classes naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of concern. Something to bear in mind is that if you choose to enroll in a college that is out of state or even out of your local area, you might be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges usually charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges typically charge a higher tuition to those students that live outside of their districts.

What are the Class Sizes ? Unless you are the kind of student that likes to sit way in the rear of the classroom or get lost in the crowd, you will undoubtedly prefer a smaller class size. Small classes permit more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are considering what the typical student to teacher ratio is for their classes. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your ultimate determination. This will also give you a chance to speak with several of the students and instructors to get their opinions regarding the sonogram tech program also.

Can the College Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to confirm that the sonographer  program you ultimately pick can furnish the class schedule you need. This is particularly crucial if you choose to continue working while you attend classes. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Maineville OH area, verify that they are available. If you can only attend part-time, find out if that is an alternative and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, find out what the procedure is for making up any classes that you may miss because of illness, work or family emergencies.
