Ultrasound Tech Work Description

Lewistown OH ultrasound tech with patientThere are more than one acceptable titles for ultrasound techs (technicians). They are also referred to as ultrasound technologists, sonogram techs, and diagnostic medical sonographers (or just sonographers). Regardless of name, they all have the same basic job function, which is to implement diagnostic ultrasound techniques on patients. Even though many practice as generalists there are specialties within the profession, for example in cardiology and pediatrics. The majority work in Lewistown OH clinics, hospitals, outpatient diagnostic imaging centers and even private practices. Common daily work functions of an ultrasound technician can involve:

  • Maintaining records of patient medical histories and specifics of each procedure
  • Counseling patients by explaining the procedures and answering questions
  • Preparing the ultrasound machines for testing and then sterilizing and recalibrating them
  • Transferring patients to treatment rooms and making them comfortable
  • Utilizing equipment while limiting patient exposure to sound waves
  • Evaluating results and determining necessity for further testing

Ultrasound techs must routinely assess the performance and safety of their machines. They also must adhere to a high ethical standard and code of conduct as health practitioners. In order to sustain that degree of professionalism and stay up to date with medical knowledge, they are mandated to complete continuing education training on an ongoing basis.

Sonogram Technician Degrees Offered

Lewistown OH ultrasound technician performing sonographyUltrasound technician students have the choice to earn either an Associate Degree or a Bachelor’s Degree. An Associate Degree will generally take about 18 months to 2 years to finish based upon the program and class load. A Bachelor’s Degree will require more time at as long as 4 years to finish. Another alternative for individuals who have already received a college degree is a post graduate certificate program. If you have earned a Bachelor’s Degree in any major or an Associate Degree in a relevant health sector, you can instead choose a certificate program that will take only 12 to 18 months to complete. One thing to keep in mind is that the majority of ultrasound technician schools do have a practical training element as a portion of their curriculum. It often may be fulfilled by taking part in an internship program which many colleges set up with Lewistown OH clinics and hospitals. After you have graduated from one of the certificate or degree programs, you will then need to fulfill the certification or licensing prerequisites in Ohio or whichever state you elect to practice in.

Sonographer Online Colleges

student attending online sonography class in Lewistown OHAs previously mentioned, nearly all ultrasound tech colleges have a clinical requirement to their programs. So while you can obtain a certificate or degree online, a substantial part of the training will be either conducted in an on-campus lab or at an authorized off campus facility. Clinical training can often be satisfied through an internship at a local Lewistown OH hospital, outpatient clinic or family practice. But the rest of the classes and training can be attended online in your Lewistown home. This is particularly beneficial for those individuals that continue working while earning their degrees. In addition online programs are frequently less expensive than traditional options. Expenditures for study materials and commuting can be decreased as well. But just as with every ultrasound tech school you are considering, check that the online program you ultimately pick is accredited. Among the most highly respected accrediting agencies is the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). Accreditation is particularly significant for certification, licensing and finding employment (more on accreditation later). So if you are dedicated enough to learn outside of the classroom in the convenience of your own home, then an online school may be the ideal choice for you.

What to Ask Sonogram Tech Schools

Questions to ask Lewistown OH ultrasound technician schoolsNow that you have decided on the type of degree or certificate that you would like to obtain, you can initiate the procedure of assessing and comparing ultrasound tech schools. You will first probably want to choose whether you will access classes online or travel to a school campus in the Lewistown OH area. Obviously location will be important if you decide on the latter, and the cost of tuition undoubtedly will be an important qualifier as well. But there are additional factors that you must also take into account, for instance if the schools are accredited and if they offer internships. Therefore in order to perform your due diligence so that you can arrive at your final selection, below are a few questions that you may want to ask each ultrasound tech school prior to making a decision.

Are the Sonogram Technician Colleges Accredited? Most ultrasound technician colleges have acquired some type of accreditation, whether national or regional. However, it’s still crucial to make sure that the program and school are accredited. One of the most highly respected accrediting organizations in the field of sonography is the Joint Review Committee on Education in Diagnostic Medical Sonography (JRC-DMS). Programs receiving accreditation from the JRC-DMS have undergone an extensive assessment of their instructors and course materials. If the program is online it may also earn accreditation from the Distance Education and Training Council, which targets online or distance education. All accrediting organizations should be recognized by the U.S. Department of Education or the Council on Higher Education Accreditation. Along with ensuring a premium education, accreditation will also help in securing financial aid and student loans, which are many times not available for non-accredited programs. Accreditation can also be a pre-requisite for licensing and certification as required. And many Lewistown OH employers will only hire graduates of an accredited program for entry-level positions.

Are Internship Programs Provided? Find out if the sonogram technician programs you are interested in have relationships with Lewistown OH hospitals or clinics for internship programs. Internships are not only an excellent means to receive practical training in a clinical environment, they are also a means to satisfy the practical training requirement for most programs. As a secondary benefit, they may help graduates and students develop professional relationships in the Lewistown healthcare community and help with obtaining employment.

Is Job Placement Assistance provided? You will most likely wish to hit the ground running after graduation, but finding that initial job in a new profession can be challenging without support. Ask if the sonographer schools you are considering have job placement programs and what their success rates are. High and rapid placement rates are an excellent sign that the schools have substantial networks and great relationships with Ohio healthcare employers. It also substantiates that their graduates are highly regarded and sought after.

Where is the Program Located? For a number of students, the school they pick will need to be within commuting distance of their Lewistown OH home. Those who have decided to attend classes online naturally will not have to worry themselves with the location of the campus. However, the availability of area internships will be of importance. One thing to consider is that if you decide to enroll in a program that is out of state or even out of your local area, you may be required to pay a higher tuition. State colleges often charge higher tuitions for out of state residents. And community colleges frequently charge a higher tuition for those students that don’t reside within their districts.

What Size are the Classes ? Unless you are the kind of student that prefers to sit way in the rear of class or get lost in the crowd, you will probably prefer a small class size. Smaller classes allow for more individual participation and personalized instruction. Ask the colleges you are looking at what the average teacher to student ratio is for their classrooms. If practical you may prefer to sit in on one or more classes before making your final decision. This will also give you an opportunity to speak with a few of the students and instructors to get their perspectives regarding the ultrasound tech program also.

Does the School Accommodate your Schedule? And finally you need to verify that the sonographer  program you finally select can offer the class schedule you need. This is particularly important if you decide to continue working while attending school. If you must schedule evening or weekend classes in the Lewistown OH area, make sure that they are available. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, check if that is an option and how many courses or credit hours you would have to carry. Also, learn what the protocol is for making up any classes that you may miss due to work, illness or family obligations.

    Lewistown, Ohio

Lewistown (also Lewis Town or Lewiston)[1] is a census-designated place in central Washington Township, Logan County, Ohio, United States.[2] Until the 1829 Treaty of Lewistown, the community was the site of a Shawnee settlement. It is said to have been named in honor of “Captain” John Lewis, a Shawnee leader.[3] Nearby Indian Lake was once known as the Lewistown Reservoir, after this settlement. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 43333.[4] The population of the ZCTA for ZIP code 43333 was 693 at the 2000 census.

The area around Lewistown was populated by several Native American tribes resettled as a result of the Treaty of Fort Meigs. This treaty, signed on September 29, 1817 also provided for the University of Michigan, as well as other grants.

In the 1820s Lewistown was a village primarily inhabited by Seneca and Shawnee people. It was also the eastern point in a reservation for these groups that stretched westward to the headwaters of Loramie Creek.[5]
